EZ Rider Finds the Right Fit: A New EAM Built for Their Team

On October 29th, EZ Rider, the public transit agency serving the Midland and Odessa region of Texas, launched a new Enterprise Asset Management (EAM) system powered by Spare.

This launch wraps up a three-year search for a solution that matches EZ Rider’s scale, supports its modernization goals, and helps staff work with greater clarity and control.

Flexibility required for mid-sized fleets

EZ Rider operates a fleet of 42 vehicles across paratransit and demand-response services. Their previous asset management system was outdated and hard to use. Most of the tools within the system felt as if they were designed for much larger agencies, and EZ Rider knew they could do much better and find something that was right for them.

“We looked for three years, but nothing could truly accommodate our needs,” said Adrian Renteria, Information Technology & Systems Specialist at EZ Rider. “There are a lot of options out there, but none that fit us the way we needed them to.”

Many systems were overloaded with features the team didn’t need. Instead of helping, the extra complexity made it harder to find and use essential data. What EZ Rider actually needed: real-time asset visibility that connects to dispatch, mobile-first inspections that mechanics complete in minutes, preventive maintenance scheduling that doesn't require a dedicated fleet manager, and compliance reporting ready for FTA audits.

Peer recommended solution

Robert Green, Director of Maintenance and Facilities at EZ Rider, led the search for a new Enterprise Asset Management software and first heard about Spare from nearby agencies like CitiBus and other Texas agencies. They spoke positively about their experience with Spare Maintain. What convinced him wasn't just the software - it was how Spare approaches implementation for mid-sized fleets.

“I wanted a system we could help build, something tailored to our fleet and our workflows. With Spare, we could finally do that.”

Spare’s collaborative approach meant EZ Rider could shape the system around their needs instead of adapting their operations to fit a fixed platform.

Built together, side by side

To support a smooth launch, the Spare implementation team traveled to Texas and worked on-site with the EZ Rider team to develop the system during implementation and for launch. Their hands-on support was invaluable to configure the system around EZ Rider’s existing processes and training staff.

“It’s been a really good experience working with Spare,” said Adrian Renteria. “They answered every question and made sure everyone, from maintenance to dispatch - understood the system. It was amazing.”

This level of collaboration made onboarding easy and gave the EZ Rider team confidence that the system they were building alongside the Spare team, was built for them and their unique needs.

Results: clarity and efficiency

Now that the new EAM is in place, the team is already seeing the results:

  • A platform that’s simple to navigate
  • Fast, reliable access to the right information
  • Tools that technicians find useful and easy to use
  • Organized, accurate data that saves time and avoids mistakes

EZ Rider team members used to spend hours tracking down misplaced information, they now have a clear view of every asset. EZ Rider team members used to spend hours tracking down misplaced information; they now have a clear, real-time view of every asset. This shift doesn’t just make daily work easier, it allows the team to make faster, more confident decisions, respond to issues before they escalate, and ultimately deliver a more dependable service to riders. By removing the guesswork, the new EAM is helping the organization operate with greater consistency, accountability, and long-term sustainability.

Built for today, ready for what’s next

For EZ Rider, Spare EAM provides the foundation for their operations today and a pathway for long-term growth.

“We finally have a system that fits us,” Adrian said. “Not too big, not too complex—just right for the way we need to work.”

At Spare, we’re proud to support agencies like EZ Rider with tools that work the way they need them to and are adaptable to their needs. EZ Rider's EAM success provides a proven blueprint for transit agencies of all sizes seeking to modernize their maintenance needs.

Spare EAM gives transit agencies of all sizes - from 25 to 1,000+ vehicles - a flexible platform that adapts to their operations, integrates with their existing systems, and gives mechanics tools designed for the field, not the back office.
