Neighborhood Express (NEXT) expands access in South Gresham through shared rides and real-time routing
TriMet has launched a new on-demand pilot, Neighborhood Express (NEXT), to provide more flexible mobility options in South Gresham. It’s currently available to paratransit riders, the service with the next iteration of the pilot to open to the general public as part of a broader rollout. Built on Spare’s platform, NEXT offers both scheduled and same-day, shared rides that connect people to key destinations and nearby transit stops—showing how transit agencies can strategically integrate microtransit to complement fixed-route networks.
The goal? Expand access in areas where traditional fixed-route service may not be as effective, while gathering insights for potential service design improvements across the region.

Improving transit connections with flexible, shared rides
Designed to complement TriMet’s existing fixed-route and paratransit services, NEXT provides:
- Real-time routing and dynamic trip matching
Riders can request trips through the TriMet NEXT app or by calling a dedicated dispatch line. Trips are automatically optimized based on demand, location, and traffic. - Seamless transfers to fixed routes
The service helps riders reach nearby TriMet bus and MAX light rail stops, creating an easier way to move across TriMet’s transit network—similar to approaches taken by agencies like LA Metro. - Low-cost fares in line with the broader system
Riders pay the same fare as a standard bus or light rail trip: $2.80 for adults, $1.40 for youth and honored citizens.
NEXT runs Monday to Friday from 6:30 a.m. to 8:00 p.m. and weekends from 9:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m., serving designated zones within South Gresham.

Using real-time optimization for more reliable transit operations
Spare’s platform plays a critical role behind the scenes, powering real-time decision-making and streamlined operations through Spare Engine, our intelligent trip-matching and optimization platform.
One standout feature for the TriMet team is automated re-routing. If a vehicle goes offline, the system automatically redistributes trips to maintain reliability — no manual intervention required. Dispatchers also highlighted the platform’s flexibility, noting how easy it is to make real-time adjustments or add new features on the fly.
“What I find unique is that this platform is so customizable — I can add an extra feature when I need it, on the fly.” — Alexis Walwyn, Lead Dispatcher, TriMet

Explore flexible transit in your community
This pilot marks another step in TriMet’s efforts to make transit more accessible, responsive, and connected. By leveraging technology that adapts in real time, agencies like TriMet are able to test new service models that better meet community needs — without adding significant cost or operational complexity.
TriMet joins other forward-thinking agencies like LA Metro and Waco Transit in exploring innovative transit solutions.

Interconnectivity within our system has been a goal of our organization, more specifically how can we plan to bridge all of our services together: fixed route (local and express routes), light rail lines, and commuter Northstar rail service – and now on-demand Metro micro. We are very excited that our system is integrated together and riders can plan system ride trips easier now with the multimodal functionality that Spare has made possible for us.
