Unwrapping the Gift of Time: Spare’s Holiday Hibernation

Shelby Perera

As the first month of 2024 comes to an end, we want to take a moment to reflect on the joy, relaxation, and refreshing energy that our team brought into the new year. At Spare, we kicked off the year with our Annual Holiday Hibernation period - a cherished tradition that allows our employees to recharge and make the most of the festive season without the stress of work. From December 25 to January 1, our team took a well-deserved and fully paid break to unwind, rejuvenate and create memories with their family and friends.

More Than Just a Vacation

Today’s world is all about the hustle and bustle, so finding that delicate balance between work and life can feel like trying to juggle flaming torches while riding a unicycle - challenging would be an understatement! At Spare, we get it. We work hard, but we also understand the importance of taking a breather; of stepping back to prioritize our mental health and well-being in a world that never seems to slow down.

"I look forward to the holiday hibernation every year as it gives me time to decompress, take a break from work and spend quality time with my family. This year, we were able to host Christmas dinner at our home for the first time!"

- Colin Perepelken, Senior Software Developer

Redefining Work-Life Balance

Spare has been redefining the way we approach work-life balance. In addition to the 15 days of vacation leave that all members of our team receive each year, at a minimum, we take things a step further by providing extra time off during the holiday season. This fully paid holiday hibernation period is our way of showing appreciation for the hard work and dedication our team puts in throughout the year.

And here’s the best part: since our Spartians can enjoy some well-deserved time off knowing their costs are covered, they still have 15 days of vacation to use whenever and however they want.

“Having the additional days off at the end of the year really enabled me to properly unplug and be present with my family during the holidays. And the fact that we get these extra paid days off every year in addition to our existing paid time off is so generous.”

- Rebecca Apostoli, Director of People & Talent

A Culture of Flexibility

With flexibility at the heart of our company culture, we empower our employees to take control of their schedules and work location, allowing them to strike their own balance between work and personal life. Whether it’s setting your own work hours or designating a meeting-free day each week, Spare understands that individual needs vary, and we encourage everyone to tailor their workdays to suit their individual preferences.

Spare also recognizes the vital role that regular breaks play in maintaining employee happiness, engagement and productivity. That’s why, at Spare, we aim to add a little extra sunshine into our employees’ summers with our R&R (Rest and Relaxation) Days. Our R&R days are additional paid days off on designated Fridays during the summer and are all about giving you the time and space to unwind and recharge.

"It was nice to have the extra time to spend with loved ones, enjoy daytime activities, and take some time to relax and re-energize before kicking off the new year. It's great that I got to save my vacation days to use at a different time in the year as a bonus!"

- Fathima Tabbasim, Marketing Co-op

A Glimpse Into Our Holiday Hibernation Chronicles

Let’s take a peek into how some of our Spartians have used their Holiday Hibernation period this year!

Seasonal Delights

Our team delved into the joys of seasonal baking and cooking; from holiday cookies to a traditional Sri-Lankan New Year’s breakfast.

Martini Town Magic

Some of our Spartians stepped into a world of movie magic at Martini Town, Langley’s film backlot. Transformed into a Christmas wonderland, Martini Town became a holiday experience they would never forget.

Furry Festivities

Our furry friends weren’t left out of the holiday fun! They took center stage, showing off their most adorable Christmas attire.

Adventurous Escapes

One of our Spartians took to the skies during the Holiday Hibernation, embarking on their first ever solo flying excursion!

At Spare, we are committed to fostering a workplace culture that prioritizes the well-being and happiness of our employees. If you are looking for a company that values your personal time as much as your professional contributions, consider joining our team.

We’ve never had all departments agree that something is working before—until Spare. It’s always been a challenge to get buy-in from everyone, but with this new system, drivers, call takers, and management are all on board. The collaboration with Spare has been amazing, and we’re seeing the results every day.
