10 years in, we’re just getting started

Ten years ago, in 2015, Alexey, Josh, and I began imagining what cities could look like if they had access to truly great technology. We were driven by a simple idea: the same innovation that transformed private industries could also transform the cities we call home.
We began exploring how cities actually function, the systems, data, and people that keep them running every day. Very quickly, we realized something important: cities have far more potential than they’re able to realize. What if technology could unlock that potential?
That question became our decade-long mission: to transform one of the most vital systems in any community: public transit. Our hypothesis was bold but simple: complex, mission-critical systems can and will be improved through automation.
Over the past ten years, we’ve proven that hypothesis right. Great software, in the hands of great teams, can have a profound impact on communities. With Spare today, millions of people take trips that reduce emissions, strengthen social connections, and save money for both riders and transit agencies. Ten years in, we are still just getting started.
Spare V2: the next era at Spare
As we enter our second decade, we’re announcing the next era of Spare—what we’re calling Spare V2—and the plan that will guide us forward.
Our roadmap is clear:

- Step 1: Become the most trusted automation platform for operating mission-critical specialized transit services
- Step 2: Become the most trusted AI platform for operating all mission-critical transit services
- Step 3: Become the most trusted AI platform for operating cities
We have spent the last decade working on Step 1. While that mission continues, we are now beginning Step 2.
Smarter systems for mission-critical transit
Transit isn’t just about moving people. It’s about orchestrating complex systems of people, assets, and policies that connect communities equitably to the opportunities and services they need to thrive.
Agencies have achieved remarkable results with limited resources and fragmented systems. Today, one software provider manages fixed route, another handles paratransit. Separate tools manage customer relationships, vehicle maintenance, and scheduling. This patchwork wasn’t created by design but by necessity.
Because these systems don’t speak to each other, critical information gets lost. Inspection data may flag a serious issue, but if it doesn’t reach maintenance, the problem often goes unnoticed until it becomes critical. And because paratransit systems operate in isolation, agencies can’t steer riders to a fixed route when it’s a better fit. The result is higher costs, fewer available trips, and less reliable service for the people who depend on it most.
For riders, it can feel like an orchestra without a conductor. Journeys that should happen don’t. Doctor’s appointments are missed. Family visits are abandoned. Freedom of movement is limited for the very people who rely on transit most.
This is the problem Spare is solving — and it defines our next era. We’re bringing the conductor to the orchestra, putting artificial intelligence in the hands of cities through a single unified platform for managing complex operations.
Over the past year, we’ve made tremendous progress toward this vision: a new multimodal rider experience, modernized customer engagement solutions, stronger analytics and business intelligence, and the introduction of Scout, our AI Assistant.
Introducing Spare EAM

This month we announced the next evolution of the Spare Platform: Spare EAM, our Enterprise Asset Management solution. Built to optimize the foundation of every transit system—its assets.
With EAM, we’re connecting complex operations to the assets and maintenance teams that keep them running. Inspections, work orders, and vehicle data move through one system, helping teams spot problems early and prevent them from turning into breakdowns.
Agencies using Spare EAM are already seeing the difference — faster repairs, simpler workflows, and a stronger link between the garage, dispatch, and riders on the road.
EAM is the asset management backbone for every part of an agency’s operation, not just paratransit. It connects seamlessly with Spare Analytics, Scout, and the broader Spare Platform to form one intelligent system that keeps service reliable and cities moving.
The next 10 years
As we look ahead, the next decade will redefine what’s possible for every community — not just the largest and wealthiest cities, but also the smaller ones that have long been left behind by limited budgets and outdated tools.
Ten years from now, every small town and city will have access to the same resources as Los Angeles or Boston. That’s the future we’re building.
Spare began with a belief that technology could make cities better. A decade later, we are proving that AI can make them extraordinary.
When the systems that move us work in harmony, cities flourish. And when cities flourish, so does humanity.

Having applications in Spare not only significantly streamlines our application processing, but it also allows us to more efficiently and effectively serve GATRA riders. GATRA can process applications in real time so riders can start using the service right away.
